Start keeping track of your temperature on the first day of your period.
Use a basal body thermometer (mercury thermometer), which shows precise changes of 1/10 of a degree in your temperature. A digital thermometer can also work, although it's not as accurate and the 1/10 degree changes can be confusing.
The temperature can be taken either in your mouth or the rectum (or even in the vagina).
Take your basal body temperature before you get up and after at least 3-4 hours of continuous sleep, preferably at the same time each day.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke before you take your temperature.
Write down the temperature on the BBT chart.
On the day of ovulation, there is sometimes a drop in temperature.
About 1-2 days after ovulation, there is usually an increase in temperature by at least 0.2 degrees.
Calculate your coverline after you have detected ovulation.
The temperature stays up until your next menstrual period.

The best way to find out EXACTLY when your ovulating period is, is to buy an ovulation kit. It is the most accurate way to find out. It is usually a couple of weeks after your period. I usually can feel when I am ovulating, but have been told by the doctor not many people can. When you are ovulating it feels the same way it would as if you drank a LOT of water and walked up a hill...kinda like cramps in your side.
Hope this helps :o)!!!

The whole 411? Huh? Anyway, you can use an ovulation kit if trying to become pregnant, or, when you see a slight discharge in your panties you know you have already ovulated; the discharge is among other things, the disintegrated egg.

Figure out when your next period is due to begin and count back 12 to 16 days. This will give you a range of days when you will probably be ovulating (for women with a 28-day cycle, the 14th day is often the one).

Ovulation takes place 14 days after your period. Some women feel sharp pains when they ovulate while some women have a clear discharge from their vagina.

One thing you can do is get a basal thermometer. It should come with directions as to what temperatures to look for and when to take them. What you do is take your temperature in the morning as soon as you get up, and you look for it to be at a certain level. You can get these at drugstores.
Good luck!
