in a real depression like the one that began in the fall of 1929, there was no daycare. Moms just didn't work. There was no work. I'm not sending my kids to day care while I sit at home. What sence does that make?
If your looking for a depression proof profession, may I suggest you get into the food industry. Grow a garden. Set up a green house in the back yard. Get into the energy industry. Buy a spot of ground where you can set up a micro hydro electric generating plant and get a paycheck from the utitility company. After all there are lots of people who's existance is dependant on electric power. Turn it off and the medical care you recieve in a hospital will move back about 150 years. Diabetics will die if there is no refrigeration to keep and story insulin. In fact with out electric power there will be no medicine You can't make it with out power. Yes I know some one is going to argue home herbal remidies but I don't know of one that works for diabetics or is a substitute for dialisis or home oxygen or nitro for a bad heart etc. You can't make antibiotics without power.
When money is in short supply daycare is going to be the first thing to go along with all the subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, cable tv, cell phones, internet access. You can live without those things...you do need food and power.

Doubt it. In a depression it is hard to find work, and if you can you don't work for much. It would probably be more cost effective for most families to either have one parent stay home, or in the case of single families, the parent to stay home with the child and try to get federal aid.
Another senario would be that extended families would most likely help out each other with babysitting and things like that.

I would say no. In a depression you have a lot of people out of work. If the parents don't have a job they don't have money to pay for daycare and furthermore, if the parents are unemployed, they have no need for day care.

If women continue to work, yes. Some women do not make a lot of money, cannot afford decent daycare and will be the first to lose their jobs. The thinking is that if you cut front-line staff and eliminate entry-level positions then people will work harder and you can pay them less. It doesn't work but companies believe in this approach. Slash and burn doesn't work.

I would say no, because people would not be able to afford child care for the children, and would probably resort to getting family members to look after them for free if both parents had to work.

In a depression, one or both parents are out of work, so they would look after their own kids.
