Snakes have TWO distinct biting styles. There is the defensive bite which is a bite and release and sometimes repeat.. Snakes engage in this bite when they feel THREATENED. And then there is the i think you are food bite, which is the bite and hold. This last bite happens alot with captive snakes that smell mice or other prey item on thier owner or are handled so little that when thier cage is opened they assume food is coming and bite the first thing they see moving. Snakes are simple brained creatures and do not plot to bite anyone that is not seen as prey. USually snakes give warning either in posture or body or even some that make warning sounds. Most people do not recognize the signs however or do not have enough time to back off before they are bitten.

All snakes will bite when threatened or surprised, but most will usually avoid an encounter if possible and only bite as a last resort. Snakes found in and near water are frequently mistaken as being poisonous. Most species of snake are harmless and many bites will not be life-threatening, but unless you are absolutely sure that you know the species, treat it seriously.

A snake bites because it's a snake. I'm sure they are still upset because it was thrown from the garden of Eden for it's deceiving ways and cursed to crawl on it' belly. If I was a snake I'd bite too.

It either is attempting to eat or is afraid and biting in defence. Snakes are extremely limited in decision making ability. Much more machine like than mammals.
There is little emotion other than fear. Almost no motivation other than keep the right temperature, eat, defend and occasionally breed.

Normally snakes never bite unless & until they are provoked and teased. Fear and danger drives them to bite. They only bite as a resort to save themselves.
