There is a light on the dashboard which comes on periodically, it is in the shape of a car with a little spanner superimposed on it, I thought it was the 'service due' light but it has not long had a service and has only done 38000 miles, it comes on and goes off every now and again, also the exhaust has started smoking a bit, could the two be linked?

Forgot to say, the light was doing the same thing before the service so I thought it must be due, they didn't say anything about it at the garage. Thinking about it, the light usually comes on after having been driving for a while, probably means that it is a fault that occurs when the engine is hot?

Checked the oil yesterday, it hasn't gone down very much as far as I could see, still nearly on max, has been about 3 months since service.

Your smoke could be your piston rings or your vale oil seals.
does it use any oil? best to check the oil level top it up and check it again. does it smoke more when cold, under load? usualy service due lights stay on until they are reset. loose connection? take her back in and get it fixed

Its the engine service warning light .You need to get it to a garage that has a code reader so they can locate the fault area did they reset the service light after servicing the van?Regards Mick

The light is to do with the engine management system, and the exhaust is most likely smoking because there is oil dripping in the engine bay. (I think-well, my man does)
