In terms of inventiveness Hendrix.
Van Halen, Satriani and Vai some of the contemporary guitarists that will influence the next generation of guitarists.

I think that Jeff Healey has an unconventional style of playing that gives him a unique sound.

Michael Angelo Batio is also unique in that he can play two guitars at the same time. One right handed and one left handed. Right now it's more for show, but I'm looking forward to hear and see where he will take it.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was the finest guitarist I have ever seen. No question. The best living guitarist is probably Chuck Prophet - awesome rhythm/lead and the most under rated musician in the world today.

Tricky one this!

Living, I would say for all round ability and the ability to move in out of different musical types then it has to be Clapton, his recordings dont show the same emotional touches as when you hear him live, when live its just him the guitar and the amp and a **** load of experience, listen to the cream gigs from last year, top show.

Dead, Hendrix no contest!!

There cannot be an answer to this question -- some people like Fords, and some like Chevrolets (quote from the great Cliff Gallup) come to think of it, Cliff WAS one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Ah dude. This is hard. The best feel player is probably Hendrix. But when u think of the theory players, loads of people come along like Satrani, Clapton and Fruciante. It all depends on how it makes u feel. I think Hendrix is the best becoz he wrote beautiful melodic peices. I personally think 'The Wind Cries Mary' solo is the best becoz it is so beutifully written.
