The heart acts as a pump to bring blood throughout the body. first, deoxygenated blood flows through tthe superior and inferior vena cavae which enters the heart through the right atrium which then enters the right ventricle. the right ventricle pumps the blood through the pulmonary arterery which then leads the blood to the alveoli in the lungs. In there, an exchange of gases (CO2 and O2) occurs. as a reult, the deoxygenated blood becomes oxygenated and flows through the pulmonary vein. From the pulmonary vein, the blood enters the left atrium which leads to the left ventricle. the left ventricle now pumps the oxygenated blood through the aorta that leads to all the blood vessels in the body. the process repeats itself.

The heart is what is called a positive displacement pump. Blood flows through a valve into a chamber, which then contracts via muscular compression, forcing the blood out through another valve into the system.
