The current theory says that oil is "the product of compression and heating of ancient organic materials over geological time." It also says that very few dinosaurs were compressed into oil.

The idea that dinosaurs are made into oil might come from the observation that prehistoric animals are sometimes preserved in tar pits.

Actually the latest theory is that the source is not organic at all - which might explain why proven reserves are at an all time high.
