In 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians celebrated the first Thanksgiving, they were gobbling up many more foods than just turkey.

You could ask the same question, "why is it traditional to have turkey for Christmas dinner in the UK. ?... Probably the same reason,.... that turkey used to be a real treat, but now with factory farming it has plummeted to being quite cheap and run of the mill, although the tradition lives on. America has the advantage that wild turkeys were/are game on hunting expeditions, although smaller than our fattened battery chemical induced rubbish that they sell in frozen lumps nowadays.

Turkey is one of the foods which was readily available in the woods of Massachusetts and the Indians had to help their stranded guests survive. Yes, the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock by accident. They were headed for the English colonies down south -Jamestown.

Um... not that this is particularly about turkey, but... My family doesn't always have it. My grandmother is actually allergic to turkey (don't ask me why, personally I think she's lying so we don't make her cook), so when she visits on Thanksgiving we have something else. One year we had spaghetti, another we had pancakes, etc. We are thankful every year she graces one of my aunts or uncles houses instead of ours. I like turkey! And pancakes are just weird for Thanksgiving!

Because when the settlers to the new Americas landed they shared a meal with the native Americans and turkey was one of the festive foods they ate. I'm from the UK and know that!

There were many wild turkeys running around back in the day. Of course, now they are mostly in slaughter houses. So, they just caught one along with others meats and cooked it.
