All answers are correct but I think you need some explaining and some understanding.
Draw a line 10 inches long.
Centre of the line is at 5 inches. Put a small vertical line, call this Zero. Where vertical line meets 10 inches long line put a point.
Mark about same size small vertical lines at 1 inches on both sides of the zero.
Star on the right side of the zero
Now number them 1, 2, 3 ,4,
Start on left side of the zero and number then -1, -2, -3 -4.
Make sure that -1 and +1 are closest to the zero.
What you just did is drew a picture of sign convention.
Remember you have not written -5 or +5
Now draw a vertical line 1inch long on top of -5 location. Put a point at the end of at his line.
Go on the other side and draw a vertical line 2 inches long on top of +5 location. Put a point at the end of this line.
Join the two points by drawing a line.
Extend the small line to the top line, you will have nine vertical line.
From left to right each line is bigger(longer) then one to its left.
Vertical line at -2 is smaller the vertical line at -1.
I Hoping this visual aid will help you understand sign convention.

Other way to memember is that number to the right is greater.
Since number -1 is to the right of -2, -1 >-2

-1 is greater is because if you -1 with 3, you will get 2, but if you add -2 with 3 it is -1. Likewise,-1 is the greatest number than any other negative whole number.
