The government actually recognizes that they are monopolies but they have special status since they are sports leagues. If they revocoked that status then the sports organizations would have to split up, since the government realizes this is absurd they have given them special status.

From my understanding, a monopoly would indicate that you are rthe only game in town (so to speak). If you have competition, even you you dominate them, you are not a monopoly. For example, EA Sports purchased the rights to be the only company to make NFL football games. No other company can use registered teams in their games until the contract expires. That would be a monopoly
