RE:
Are there any venomous/poisonous snakes in Ohio? If so, what kinds and in what parts of Ohio?
I have heard of rattlesnakes in southern Ohio but can't find anything on that?

Ohio has only three species of venomous snakes, two of which have rattles at the end of the tail. The third species is the copperhead. Although many believe the water moccasin occurs in Ohio, it actually ranges no farther north than the Dismal Swamp in southeastern Virginia

Northern Jefferson County, specifically Springfield and Brush Creek Townships (Bergholz-Salineville) has copperheads. Usually found on the hillsides facing afternoon sun. Worked on the railroad and they have been found on the ex NYC Piney Fork Line between Wattsville and Bergholz and up in southern Columbiana County, a place right above Salineville on the ex-PRR Cleveland Line known as White Culvert. There was a case up there in the 1970 s where a kid looked under a junk car and was bitten in the face. His name was Ketchum. He had to be hospitalized in Pittsburg but recovered. Took a year to get over the bite. Recently, there have been rumors persistent in Jefferson County that ODNR has been re-introducing Timber Rattlers to control the turkey population. While I do not believe that ODNR dropped in Timber Rattlers into Jefferson County, I work with a lady who resides near Jefferson Lake State Park near rural Richmond, Oh.(northern Jefferson County) and she grew up in Arizona and knows exactly what a rattlesnake is. She claims that she recently spotted a Timber Rattlesnake at the end of her rural driveway on several occasions, last summer. I m inclined to believe her. My question is: I spend quite a bit of time as a part-time railway track inspector over in Perry County - Ohio (southwest of Zanesville, north of Somerset, north of New Lexington). I spend time walking track looking for track safety defects (and snakes), out of Mt. Perry, Oh. According to the locals, there are no copperheads. However, I am a little skeptical as the terrain is similar to Jefferson and Columbiana counties, i.e. copperhead country.

I have personnally have seen copperheads in eastern ohio. They mainly inhabit the woods and along creeks in Beaver Creek State Park in Ohio. I have also had them occasionally show up in my backyard, since our property borders woods, but not for many years. They are here, just not always seen.
