For mac there are a free apps that will rip and reformat files to fit on ipod. Not difficult to do, just takes a lot of processing time.

Use MactheRipper to rip DVD, then use any of the following to convert to ipod

iSquint, Movie Pod, MoviesformyPod.

There is an app that will rip and reformat, but I'm not that satisfied with the results, it tends to pixelate every once in a while. It's called Handbrake also free.
