All the rubbish aside about insurance rates and to die or not to die in an accident...it all comes down to one thing for me....the Government telling me what to do IN MY CAR!!!!
I am an adult, old enough to drive, old enough to buy/pay for a car, pls don't tell me I have to wear a seat-belt to!!
I think it's far more hazardous to talk on a cell phone while driving, there are more than enough laws governing what I do when I get behind the wheel.....Leave the seat-belt alone! (same with helmet laws). Really who am I hurting if I don't wear a seat-belt or helmet? Myself only right? Do let me decide for myself...that's a lot different than getting behind the wheel tanked and potentially killing others because my driving is impaired.

I think it's a good law. It saves lives and has saved a lot of people from serious injury too.
It's not even "only" about your own life. In case of a serious accident you could actually kill someone who is with you in the car by not using the seat belt. If the car flipped over and you were thrown to another part of the car, you could kill or seriously injure another person. Also, if a passenger in the back seat doesn't use the seat belt they can kill the person sitting in front of them in case of a crash, because they would hit the back of the seat with such power that the person in the front seat would be thrown forward and their head would hit the windscreen, causing serious head injury or death.
It doesn't matter if you're a good driver or not. Unexpected things can still happen. You can still have an accident (I know someone who had all the confidence in the world about his driving skills and is now permanently disabled because he crashed). Even if YOU were always careful, there's plenty of reckless drivers out there who could cause an accident involving you.
Would you rather go through the slight inconvenience of using the seat belt (you'd be amazed how fast you get used to it and don't even pay attention to it anymore and just put it on automatically) or risk killing or causing permanent disability to yourself and/or someone else in the car?

Yes, it is your life. Theoretically it should be up to you whether you use the seat belt or not. But it comes down to a matter of economics as well. Health care costs big bucks. Medical bills after serious automobile crashes can be astronomical. If those costs can be slashed by requiring drivers to wear seat belts, that's a good thing for society as a whole, as they are the ones who pay for the health care.
So yes, it's curious that the legality of a seat belt should hinge on economics, but that's the way our society works.
It would be great if people would slow down a little, not drive while impaired, and follow the rules of the road, all of which would drastically reduce the carnage on our highways.

It's the nanny culture again. Certainly it is wise to fasten a seat belt when you get in a car. We all know that. Still, it does not seem like the sort of thing that should be illegal in itself. Of course, an insurance company is absolutely certain to want to know whether or not your seat belt was fastened if there is an accident, but that is a very different thing from a ticket and fine on the DMV record when you didn't have an accident at all.

tough situation on this one. I have seen on news for some who worn their seatbelt had died, couldn't get out of a burning car cause seat belt had locked, then again I saw people who didn't wear a seat belt thrown from a car and had died. So it is hard to decide, I put mine on for safety reasons and it sets a good example for my kids when they become drivers. A Seat belt may save a life. At first I got mad cause it is my car and my right but then I thought about it for a awhile and said what's it going to hurt to seat myself in.

This is the same debate as Helmet laws for motorcyclists...NO, you do not have the right to allow yourself to become a ward of the state when your hard drive is scrambled. Your argument does not hold water. If you are silly enough to present this argument, you need a keeper, and Big Brother must step in and protect you against yourself. Sorry, but I am usually against interference by the Government, but in cases where your injuries can become MY liability, I have to side with protecting you from yourself. Good luck and peace.

If you don't wear a seat belt, you could easily be killed if you were in a accident and your insurance would go whistling up faster then you could say "car accident" 5 times.

It's the same argument for motorcyclist not wearing a helmet. The more damage done to you the more your insurance will have to pay and the more everyone elses insurance will go up. Also, maybe others, even strangers care more about your health than you do yourself. What a concept. Jesus Saves!

Why should I have to pay higher insurance rates to keep people like you, who don't use seat belts, alive in vegetative states for the rest of your life
