Do people not realize this isn't a smart thing to do? Static electricity CAN create sparks, which can cause a fire. Rare, but it can and I'm sure HAS happened, otherwise they wouldn't put a warning about it, right?

There have been NO cases of fires at the fuel pumps that have been DEFINIVLEY caused by cell phone usage.

There is a chance that static electricity can ignite a fire at the pumps, but it has been proven 9 times out of 10 to be caused by static related to getting in and out of the car. Static builds up on your clothes from rubbing on the seats and then discharges on the metal on the pump and then the fumes from the gasoline.

Do some reasearch. Stop believing everything you hear by word of mouth! Show me 1 definitive case of a fire being started by a cell phone!

PEOPLE WILL BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY HEAR! That is one of the definitions of STUPIDITY!

No No. Even getting back in your car and getting out to take out the hose will give most people enough static electricity to cause a spark. So ground yourself first by touching the gas pump.

Never, never do that. Static electricity is present in your cell phone and there are documented cases of explosions occurring with people using cell phones while pumping gas. Sure, some people may not have experienced a problem, but please, don't take the chance.

No. I don't use the cell phone while pumping gas, nor do I reenter the vehicle while fueling. In the military it's even required to ground your vehicle while fueling to prevent any static electricity discharge.

People really get stupid with these things and have no sense of courtesy or etiquette. I leave mine in my car and I don't talk on it at the pump, in a store, and especially not while driving. If I need to talk, I simply pull over into a parking lot. Common sense these days is not too common.

I am more aware now but I used to talk while pumping gas. Now, I get off as soon as I pull up to a pump. I knew a girl, that actually caught on fire like that. Sadly, she died. I wouldnt have ever thought there was truth to that but there is

FINAL DESTINATION (this question reminds me of those movies)

There was a show I saw a while back that had a video of a woman who had laundry in her car and the static electricity sparked right when she pulled the pump out of the car. I guess her leg rubbed the car that caused it and it set off the whole station.

No I never do. And it has happened. A year or 2 ago it was on the news a guy started on fire because of his cell phone. They showed a clip of it from the gas station camera and it was horrible to see the guy on fire rolling around.

Yes I do, however to reduce the static electricity all you have to do is touch your car.
