i would bring at least $500. I was there for 2 week and I spent $1000 on just food, souveniers, attractions and travel (like the subway, busses and trains). The conversion rate from dollars to pounds is not good. If you took $500 you will end up with about 250 pounds or so. And things in London are expesive.

If you've already paid for your hotel then £500 will be (far) more than enough. It's true that a lot of things are expensive, partly because of the exchange rate, but if you shop around you can find some examples of good value. There are so many restaurants, for example, that they have to compete aggressively on price, so it can be cheaper to eat in London than anywhere else in the country. There are restaurants in Soho and Covent Garden, for example, where you can eat for under £10 a head, excluding drink. Of course, you can easily pay five times that at the more classy places.

Make sure you buy 1-day travelcards rather than paying for each individual journey on the bus or subway (tube).

As for FunFirefly26's remark, "The attractions aren't very expensive because there aren't that many." Whaa?? London probably has more world-class attractions than any other city. A lot of them – like the British Museum and the major art galleries – are free, but some – like the London Eye and the Tower of London – are pricey.

I went on a tour so my breakfast and dinner was paid for each day, along with tickets for attractions, and I still spent $300. I didn't get that much, either.

Many things in London are double the price as the US. I went to Burger King one day because I thought it would be cheaper. The value meal was 5 pounds, so in reality, it cost me $10. Also, beware of the ketchup there. It tasted like glorified tomato soup.

ALOT. The exchange rate is nearly double the USD. So take whatever you would expect to spend in DC or NYC and then take double that amount. For example, a simple cheesburger will be approximately 13-17 pounds, where it's like 8 or 9$ here. The attractions aren't very expensive because there aren't that many. Just bring enough for pubs, food, and whatever you want to buy while there.

Whatever your thinking about bringing...double it. The exchange rate is nearly half, or it was about 8 months ago. It may have gotten better. Your going to need some serious cash.
