Firefighter #1??? Is everyone a little too affected from 9/11 still?! Since when did being a firefighter become a prestigious job?! I would not have even thought to put it in the top 20, let alone the top 5!
1. Medical Doctor (Surgeon)
2. Lawyer
3. Clinical Psychologist
4. CEO of a large corporation
5. a tie with all those other crap jobs that were listed!

From most prestigious to least:
1. Firefighter - despite being lower in relative income, there's the hero factor, emphasized in our collective consciousness after 9/11.
2. Lawyer - the profession we love to hate - but nevertheless, the power and income are still attractive.
3. Podiatrist - A bona fide doctor, but not nearly as prestigious as, say, a brain or heart surgeon. Still, gotta give props to a medical doctor.
4. R.N. - Not a doc, but for goodness sake, knows almost as much. Can keep you from dying.
5. Journalist - Not nearly in the same league, as ethics and integrity are generally questioned nowadays.
6. Clinical psychologist - why on the bottom? Well, how is clinical psychology considered a true science? It can't even agree upon the basic foundations and premise of what they're studying, can't agree upon a theory of the mind and behavior, and at best treat symptomatic behavior without every demonstrating root causes.
As far a gender prestige:
Fireman - definitely perceived as a male gig - women firefighters still fight the popular stigma that they aren't physically able to pull their own weight. If you were trapped in on the third floor of a burning building with both legs broken, who would you want to see coming to save you - a 250 lb. male firefighter, or a 125 lb. female firefighter?
Lawyer - TV has done a great job of portraying this as a gender-neutral profession.
Podiatrist - gender-neutral
R.N. - Still some stigma around male nurses - shouldn't be, but there is.
Journalist - gender neutral
Clinical psychologist - gender neutral.

my personal thoughts are as follows but, they probably don't agree with actual perceptions of the world.
1 - firefighter - any job that risks life and limb to help another simply should be highest in prestige.
2 - R.N. - another helping job that improves our overall health
3 - lawyer - helps resolve problems between people
4 - journalist - helps keeps us educated to the world around us
5 - clinical psychologist - helps understand ourselves
6 - podiatrist - keeps our feet healthy
I'm not sure that any of these jobs are different is prestige between woman or man (I would hope anyway)
