Racism is a complex issue and the causes are many. It is simplisitic to attribute it to just one reason.

Racism is merely a symptom of the underlying need among humans to make themselves feel better through looking down on someone else. Which is ultimately the expression of our basic xenophobia--fear of anything that isn't us. Which might be ascribed to all of us having been born, and thus being forced to recognise that there IS an 'us' and also a 'them.'
When you go on to crime and poverty, that's a whole other issue, in fact, two of them. Poverty is entirely situational. It exists either because of environmental or developmental or personal circumstances, but it is inevitable. Also, largely, if you can find the grit and determination to take it on, largely curable. With a little help. Crime results from most human's inability to be happy with what they have, and the preference among some of them for getting it at someone else's expense. Very little crime actually results from poverty, at least in the Western world, but is the result of pure greed and laziness.

There are socieites with more racism and less racism, and there are homogeneous ones where racism by definition cannot apply. There's no evidence that the prevalence of either crime or poverty is correlated with the prevalence of racism.

Nor is crime directly linked to poverty. There are rich crooks in all Western societies (some fraudsters, for example), and there are poor countries with low crime rates.

When racism exists, criminals may target victims of a different race from themselves because psychologically it's easier to disregard their suffering. Where it doesn't, criminals will target otherwise similar victims and find other ways to make some pece with themselves.

Racism is when a person of a different race is being a jerk, but instead of, calling him a jerk you use a racial slur.

The worst racism is when a person is generally a good person but you know others of there race that aren't so you assume they aren't either. Sometimes this keeps a person from a job so it may cause poverty.
I agree with the racism is ignorance theory.
When your around others from different races often enough you see they aren't that different from you.

Poverty is the root to the problems. Poverty has the tendancy to perpetuate crime, lack of education, violence, and yes, racism.

I am a cherokee indian, Imagine the racism my ancestors faced, we were slaughtered, and our women kept for breeding. There arent many of us left, i am not angry, I love america and whats more i do not hate any race of people white, black asian, mixed or other. I control my future, i am not being killed now and i am going to college to better myself. Racism does exist but sometimes it is just an excuse for anger, stupidity and ignorance.

racism is only an excuse by the ignorant who want to start a fight and blame something else for their stupidity.

i've been called a racist only because of my skin color. the persons who said i was one never took the time to know me. they just wanted a fight and well i didn't give it to them i only laughed and said.. " good idea, pick a fight with a blind person yeh real tough a.s.s"

besides i'm mixed race.

so much for the racist in me eh?
