I have records stating that two of my ancsetral uncles were Robert & Lewis Morris (Both signers of the Delclaration of Indepenedence.) I have the name of their neice but I can't find who her mother or father was and how they were related to the Morris brothers, in order for her to be their neice. How can I find this missing branch to the family tree?

Were Robert and Lewis Morris even related? They certainly weren't brothers.

That might be one of the sources of difficulty in trying to work out a family tree.

Do a complete Yahoo or Google search on the niece's name (and it's various permutations) for starters - there is a surprising amount of old-time genealogy on the net.

Next work your way down both signing Morrises - you should be able to find their trees online, since they were who they were.

Hope this is of some help. Good luck.

Before I paste in my stock answer, I'd suggest RWWC, link below.

I save this and paste it because people ask the same question 1 - 4 times a day:

What are good free sites for genealogy?
or
Does anyone know about the {surname} family?
or
How can I trace my family tree, for free?

Sometimes thay ask in the genealogy category,
Arts & Humanities -> Genealogy
sometimes they don't. If you search or browse the resolved questions in the Genealogy category, you can find more links from other people.

Here are some large free sites.

http://www.cyndislist.com/
(240,000+ links, all cross-indexed.)

http://www.familysearch.com
(Mormon's mega-site)

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
(450,000,000+ entries, some excellent, some bad, most in between)

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx?ln=
Surname meanings and origins; no specific individuals, but fun.

These are for the USA only:

http://www.usgenweb.net/
(Subdivided into state sites, which all have county sites.)
(Canada has a Canadian Gen Web, with sites for each province.)

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
(Social Security Death index - click on "Advanced".)

http://find.person.superpages.com/
(US Phone book, for looking up distant cousins)

If you get serious, you should probably buy a genealogy program. I like Roots Magic. Family Tree Maker is very popular. Both are $29 in the USA, but you can sometimes find old versions in discount bins at software stores.

has some other tips.

Regarding your questions about genealogy. The main website that you may wish to go to is:

www.rootsweb.com

Also, if you go to:

www.cyndislist.com

it opens up the world of genealogy places to you.

However, I get very little information on-line. Perhaps not more than 5%. Most of my data comes from the Federal Archives for Census information, the Mormon libraries for all kinds of church records and other data, visiting cemeteries for records and pictures of gravestones, or reading old obituaries.

If you wish you can join www.ancestry.com, but they charge $100/year. I have not yet joined their service, though I have seen it for free a few times when they had introductory specials. It looked OK.

Hope this is helpful to you.
