constantly having your hands in your mouth can definitely be harmful for you health... there are sooooo many germs you can get and because they can be embedded in your nails... you are increasing the chances of getting them in your body ... sounds weird, but try hypnosis, it helped me kick it after 21 years!!! make sure u find a reputable hypnotist.. kookie, but it worked, SWEAR!!!

It spreads bacteria and increases the odds of an infection under your nail. Also putting your hands in your mouth always ups the odds of getting sick. One of the worst things about it would be if you swallow the nail fragments that you bite off. Those things are sharp and can cause damage to your mouth or esophagus. If you've been doing it for 8 years without issue though, you're probably OK.

With the amount of germs and bacteria that accumulate under fingernails, you could be definitely affecting your health in an adverse way. Plus, it really look pretty nasty. If you know you should stop, it's time to stop.

It's unsightly but as long as you keep your hands clean then there shouldn't be any issues.

The problem is that it's hard to do that in day to day life.

I was a nail bitter as well and just made a decision to stop and whenever I had the urge I focused and didn't do it.

Most nail bitters don't know they are doing it like most habits it's hard to break.

Bacteria can grow under your nailbed, so ultimately, yes, because you are then putting that bacteria in your mouth and possibly swallowing it.
