There are many ways to become a coach for football and basketball. You can do as one of the answers before and go to college and get a PE education degree, with a concentration in coaching and team sports. If you already have a degree, you can find coaching clinics in your local area or nation wide that will give you a certificate of completion and you are nationally certified to coach. Or you can volunteer under a local high school or little league team and get an understanding and discipleship under a coach. But you have to understand that to be a coach you are going to have to have a lot, I mean a lot of patience.

It will be very difficult if you have never played before, every coach has had at least experience playing at the High School level, and most have college and pro experience as players before they become coaches, so if you have experience as a player and a Bachelors degree then go apply for a High School coaching job then work your way up to college or pro if you wish to go that far. Either way you'll need some type of experience and at least a Bachelors degree.

Well, where do you want to coach at? If you are talking local high school coach you will need to have a teaching certificate. Most head coaches of schools also teach. But, I would contact your local high school or pop warner football teams and ask what is required. Volunteer where possible so people start to know ya.
