any older Toyota or Honda is reliable (look for mid-lower 90's) just be sure you're not getting something that's not going to last. if the car has not been well kept it likely won't last a few years. Make sure the engine has had the timing belt changed because that's the first thing to go out on 100,000mile+ cars. You don't want to buy a 2k car that's going to cost another 2-3k in parts over 2 years when you could have gotten a 3k car that would have lasted. Don't rush and if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. Also look for a manual transmission. It's much less likely to tear up and is much cheaper to repair (plus it's less maintenance and better gas mileage)

Check out http://www.craigslist.org

Select your state on the right. Then your city.

On the left click on the cars+trucks link to get a listing of local cars for sale.

You can find a lot of reliable cars for sale. I prefer Toyota over Hondas, but you can find many discounted vehicle here.

I recommend that you go to a used car lot, and you may find a car for $2000
