Most large roofing manufacturers do not use glass as it makes the color match harder. The quality tests performed during manufacture are really maticulous to make sure that the granules that go on the roof are of consistant coloring. Not having the correct color is the number one cause of complaints in the industry.
The sparkling bits you see when you look at a normal shingle roof is just the sun reflecting off of the granules that are put on it. The granules are also coated with a type of oil, depending on the granule supplier, to make it water repellant.

The manufacturers use a material that uses recycled glass. Not much, but it is used. This causes the light to be reflected off these particles. When you have allot of them, you get the sparkling effect.
