I work for a small nonprofit and our CEO defrags our computers about every other month. First he runs a disk cleanup, then he defrags. Make sure your screensaver is turn off when you defrag or it will restart when your screensaver comes on. The defrag compacts files and gives you more room on your hard drive. It's a pretty simple process. Good Luck!

Most PCs have defragmentation programs, the better ones let you "analyze" before defragmenting and will let you know if you really need to defragment.
Routine defragmentation is sometimes a waste of time and it could alter adversely the performance of some of your programs.

Windows comes with a collection of house cleaning tools, including ScanDisk, Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup, to help keep your disk in peak working order.
Why should you bother with the housework? A couple of reasons. First, disks are hard working, mechanical devices and, like all mechanical devices, prone to failure. A little preventative maintenance can warn you of potential problems and fix minor glitches before they can do damage to your data.
Second, the way files are organised on your drive has a perceptible impact on the performance of your computer. If your files are stored neatly, end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk is speedier.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Normally I would defrag my hard disk when I have time.
A hard drive should be defragmented once a month as a good preventative maintenance.

DEFRAGMENTING is not a necessary task but it should be performed atleast once a month because it is a process of placing your files in an organised manner in your system & to delete or wash out the unnecessary files from your harddisk.
It also free's up your space.

defragging is a good thing for your pc, it organizes pieces of data together so the drive doesnt have to move all over to get info. I clears out area of free space to keep new data together. It depends on how large your drive is and how much free space you have. At least once a month is good.

as already mention once a month is fine. Without the simple maintenance your computer will become slower and be prone to errors. some other things worth doing are:
Full Virus/ Malware scan....at least once a week
delete unwanted or unused programs.....once a month - once every 3 months
Running a cleaning program to remove the junk that slows the computer down and is not needed......once every 1 - 3 months (Ccleaner is a good one and it can be found here http://www.ccleaner.com/ )
Opening the computer to check all wires, connections and clean away any dust.....at least once a year.
All will save you time and money in the long run and give you a more reliable computer.

A friend did it to mine (computer :) and it operated a lot better! But it's only been done once and still like a charm! I would try a free virus dr. download... I use that regularly and you'd be amazed how many bad cookies end up in there!

Yes you should do! It helps get your computer organized. How often depends on how much you use your computer. If you are on all the time, every couple of weeks would be best.
