It would really depend on several factors. First of all, are you single, thats a big one. If you are, there isn't a problem with at least talking. Secondly, how bad did it hurt you when they left, what were the circumstances? Did they cheat on you or just thought it was time to move on? Were they noncommittal or what? If they hurt you terribly and cheated on you, I would definately keep it strickly on a friends only basis. Depending on how long its been since they were in your life you would probably have to start all over again. If the pain of their leaving was dramatic, ask yourself if you really want to go through that heartache again if the same thing happens.
I was engaged when I was younger, thought he was my soul mate, we broke up and then met up again several years later. I realized then that what I felt for him back then isn't the same as what I felt later on. Too much had happened, I had grown, matured and he didn't seem to have very much. We talked for a few days and that was all I could handle. I couldn't deal with the trauma of going through it all over again, it was too much.

Depends on your current situation. Are you married? Did you break up with your true love in the first place because of cheating or abuse? Is the person broke & desperate? I'd need a lot of answers.

If he came back I would sit and talk to him, but, only as friends, or starting out that way.

If I was single I would be tempted to give him a chance.
