I think its faith in something larger than ones self. True belief that you are not alone in the world can be comforting to some people. Our beliefs are created by our environment and enculturation. The leaning is like a hand to grasp in the dark, believers don't care if there is a 100% truth that there is a god they are scared and looking for a way out of darkness. The definition of this quality for Christians is found in the scriptural text at Epistle to the Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see". (NIV) I lean more towards the ideas of nonbelievers and consider myself an agnostic. I once had religious faith but deprogrammed myself to not believe these ideals and beliefs that seem ludicrous to me; it was hard though because so many people I love and trust pushed me towards acceptance of the Christian doctrine. I think the Christian church in the US is one of the strongest cults in the world. It is there vehement denial of being a power hungry entity that makes them such a power hungry entity. The idea that belief in God the father and Jesus the son being the only way to salvation is a scary belief due to the fact that Christians pity non-believers and see them being "saved" as there only chance for being a good human being. I like the quote by Kurt Vonnegut “I am a humanist, which means, in part, that I have tried to behave decently without any expectation of rewards or punishments after I’m dead.”

I thought about just this morning, non-believers, and why. Well I came up with a ideal for you nonbelievers to ponder. We are made of something. Inside that something is a nucleus, what determines when it will die. Because we degin to die once we are born. Something control the DNA of that, right. We are technology minded animals, far above any other animal known to man. What decided that, or who? Where your mind wonders no one knows but the person that possess it. That's why everyone has a mind of their own. No two people think alike. No matter what one wants to believe. Inherent factors are one thing, your upbring is another. It has a lot to do with your thoughts and emotions. Strengths are rooted accordingly. You seem like a lonely person, are either a Hippocratic if you believe you don't need a skettet to cook in. We are not a island and therefore can't live alone in this world. Not that we choice to lean on others or get disappointed in life, we all do. The absence of reciprocal expectations from is unrealistic. One must depend upon self to get out of life their desires. Some leave this world every day with desires unfilled. That's life! We all have to have hope in something or someone, and I'm sure you do. Change your thoughts and it will change your life.

What you have said is true.
The learning is because people are scared. Not confident. If not learnt how one will know this also.
Our ancestors when there was no communication, no recording, no knowledge were scared of everything like the Sun, Moon, the rain, the cyclone. They don't know what is happening. Why it is happening. Very much afraid. Then started praying for everything. Then gradually over centuries and thousands of years came the knowledge through learning.
One day you may know through your deep learning that there is god or may be you may not learn throghout the life about god.
But how would you know whether god is there are or not without learning.
Hence learning is important.

Lean on me, I'll be your friend, I'll help you to carry on..........
No, not a quote from the Bible or some Holy Book, just a line or two from a song a few years back. We all need someone at some time of our lives 'to lean on'. Many people who have little or no belief in God, find faith in the most strange places and at the strangest times. In times of hardship, in times of death of a loved one, in fact, in most sad times. Likewise, one can find faith in the beauty of ones surroundings, on the side of a mountain when you realise how insignificant you are compared to all that surrounds you. The famous quote 'If there were no God, man would have to invent one'. I have faith, but I don't know whether it is God the Father, God the Mother, Mother Nature or whatever. I just believe. Take care............

I'm sure that even non-believers believe in "something". At some point, usually a down point, in your life, have you not said "Why me, why is this happening?" Who are you talking to.
When I say it, I just use my faith, "Lord why is this happening, you must have a reason".
The great part about it is that eventually I will see the reason. It has happened before and it will again. Maybe not tomorrow, but I look back even now over things that have happened over the years and Hey, I get it now!!!!!!
What didn't make sense then seems to fit now. Trust in your makers timing and love

no it is not a tradition. God's word, the Bible clearly says that man CAN NOT live on bread alone. Rather than every utterance coming forth from His mouth. It's is not a matter of wanting to believe or not. It is a reality. And it is impossible for God to lie. In time you will understand this if you haven't already.

I think your point is that religious belief is passed down through our family traditions and that we are brainwashed from birth to buy into it.
That's true. How many people, if they never heard the fantastic fairy tales religion is based upon until they were adults, would do anything but laugh?
Religion is something that has to be programmed into our brains at a very early age, when we're still naive enough to believe it just because our parents tell us it's true.

The first step to believe in God (or a higher something) is having reached his own border (death of a loved person, luck by a new born baby)!
If You have no real hard problems in Your live, You can't find a way to come over it.
If You have found a real helpless situation, You search such a beeing like "GOD"!

Who told you it is a leaning on somebody else? what you are, your God is. You think this God is your next door neighbour who will be at your beck and call whenyou want help and you also think this is what the beleivers are doing, don't you? Let me tell you what the beleivers do. They beleive the one who is in dwelling everywhere to carry them through. They don't live in any self-confined hole of glory and pride. So they thrive. If you find it as nonsense , just chuck it. why do you bother what they are doing? You rather ashk yourself, whether and how far, you are happy with your identitiy as a non-believer.

There comes a time in our lives when we get fed up or bored with beliefs we imbibed while growing up and want to revert back to the beliefs we were all born with instead.
We long to return to know the reason why we were so happy as children, because we still remembered then that we are children of the Divine. And our divine parents are always with us, no matter who we choose our earth parents to be.
As a set of parents recently discovered when they overheard their little girl talk to her new-born brother - "Tell me, do you remember God? As I am beginning to forget Him,"
So spiritual growth is all about remembering who we really, the divine offspring
