You've been working hard with the company for years. You decide to take another position with another company. When you tell your current employer that you've decided to leave, they offer you all you've been looking for and more. Do you take the new job, or do you keep your old one and hope all the promises actually happen? Why?

It truly depends first on the reasons you decided to leave. If you felt that your original situation was bad enough that you found another job, chances are things won't change. But that is not always true. Two years ago I did the same with my company. I had a list of 6 things that I did not like about my job. I found a new job that offered me more money. When I approached my boss to put in my notice, he asked to talk about it. I laid out my 6 reasons on the table and told him I had another offer. I ended up with a raise that was twice as high as what I would have gotten in the other position. And all 6 items were addressed and fixed. But my boss is the kind of person who really cares about meeting expectations and making sure everyone is happy. So he periodically checks in to make sure he is holding to his promises.

So I would advise making a chart to compare the two jobs. Write out the things about your current job that you were originally upset with. Be sure to include the potential for growth and future in each company. You will know which one is a better deal

Good luck!

Depends on whether I liked who I was currently working with or not and the people.... if so, I'd probably take the counter offer but get it in writing before signing anything that I'd stay with the company. If they're not willing to put all they promise in writing, then go to the new place. If you've worked hard all these years for a company that's not attempted to acknowledge you until you threatened to leave I'd have to ask myself "why".
Good luck

Conventional wisdom is to NEVER accept a counter offer. If you have already given notice (which is how I read your question) your boss knows you are not a team player and not devoted to the cause.

Sometimes an employer will make a counter offer to keep an employee through a busy season, but you have already ended your career with this employer.

If you do stay, you should know that this job is only short term. I doubt you will be considered for promotions or plum assignments.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I think it is the truth.

Hope all the promises are kept ?? Have the company you are currently with write out everything they said they are offering you to stay .... a legal document that they sign and you get a copy of it. There should be no question about whether they will keep their promises to you or not. If they are unwilling to do that much .. I would move on to the other company. Good Luck ! :)

The same thing happened to me. I decided to stay at my old job. I told my boss this "This place and the new place both have about 40 employees, I now which ones are jerks here already, at the new place the worst person might me sitting right next to me." So, if you are comfortable with the people you work with and have plenty of work to do, stay where you are. There are always personality conflicts at every work place. Good luck.

Conventional wisdom says "no," but my feeling is....one can never say never.

Talk it through. Do the pros/cons.

Is your heart telling you to stay?
