It means that war is a fine and curious game.
In war you kill men that you might otherwise call "friend"
and treat to a pint at the pub, or offer half a crown too if he was in need.

how odd and curious war is. war is wierd basically. you shoot someone, who had you met in a bar or pub youd buy them a drink or lend them some money. you shoot potential friends in war. as people tend to fight in wars because of the country they belong too not because they believe in the war, countries tend to go to war for resources or fanatical religious reasons. but the people fighting wars are still human and have all the good that come with being human. an example is the football match on christmas day between the allies and the germans in one of the world wars,1 or 2 cant remember.

This is a quote from the British writer Thomas Hardy. It refers to the "curious" fact that in war one might casually kill a man who, if one met him under different circumstances, one might treat to a drink in a bar or loan him money (a "crown" is a unit of English money).

I think it means the 'enemy' in a war is just like you, a man, a human being who you would buy a drink for in a bar or give him money if he needed it.
