How about a 9mm pistol with 2 spare mags? Nails will just put the attacker into a murderous rage. 147gr hollow points make him fall down and stop attacking you.

I've tried using that, but they break too easily. It's effective to dig in, not using enough pressure to break them, but I rather enjoy simply bending fingers back...
