I'm going through the same thing right now! Here are some items that worked for my little one:
--cold wet washcloth (you can also wring most of the water out, then freeze it for an even colder chew)
--slightly crush some frozen grapes and put them in the mesh bags that you use for starting babies on solid foods (ours are called "Fresh Food Feeders" by Munchkin)
[the above tip also works with a crushed ice cube, but it doesn't hold her interest as long]
--she LOVES to chew tags, so we give her lots of "Taggies", which seems to distract her enough to let the pain pass
--our little one responds very well to loving too. If we hold her and play with her and give her our 100% undivided attention, it really seems to help. It's a lot of work, but she's worth it!
Tylenol seems to work for the dull ache (like through the night), but doesn't work so well for the acute pain. Perhaps an NSAID like ibuprofin is better (as was mentioned above).

buy some vanilla flavoring. use it just like you would use orajel. I did this with my 3 kids. It's an old wives tale. But it works.. You can also wet a wash cloth and sit it in the freezer til it is really cold. let the baby chew on it.. that will ease the pain to. Another old wives tale is to get a dime that was made the sme year that your child was born. Drill a hole in it, put it on a string and let the baby wear it as a necklace. It worked for my second child...

Try teething tablets by Hyland. You can get them at Sav-on or any retail pharmacy. They work great. They are homeopathic, so it's not like your medicating him. Also try Advil or Motrin, they are anti-inflammatory pain medicine, so it will also help the swelling. I used the tablets for both of my children, and recommend it to anyone that I know with teething babies. Good luck

Tylenol doesnt work for toothaches because its not an anti-inflamitory. Try motrin or advil, for babies.
Also, try keeping him upright as much as possible, to help with swelling. If you remain calm, he will too.
Give him all kinds of hard foods to gnaw on. Toast and crunchy things like that.
Its miserable but it will pass.

Try very cold or almost frozen carrot, Make sure he cannot swallow it. Or Teething tablets, they worked very well for me. They dissolve quickly in the baby's mouth

My niece has teething tablets that dissolve in her mouth. They are sweet (but not sugary) so she gets excited when we give them to her, and they numb her aching gums

rub that teething gel on his gums ... and that will work for some time ... you have to ignore the crying while gently rubbing the gel ... afterwards he will calm down
