Sky Plus can do it but the user must do it manually (but only to pre recorded programmes). Surely an add on could be invented that can remove adverts and splice pre recorded programmes together ? Why cant this exist? People would pay a lot of money for it. The advertisers could do nothing about it!

How could TV companies stop say JVC or Zenith from making such a device - they couldnt? Although a lot of electronics manufacturors have a broadcast arm like SONY and SONY Pictures etc so i can see the pressure being excerted there.
The problem is TV breeds adverts which breeds money which breeds actors who get paid too much byt the revenue that is generated by adverts. Bit of a sad cycle really isnt it

But dont you think we all develop and immunity to advertising after a while as there is too much of it? it therefore becomes innefective and pointless and just annoying?

So the upshot is we have to endure adverts forever. Isnt that a bit draconian?

I wonder how advertisers can prove what potential revenue is lost if tv viewers remove adverts using a device. those viewers are obviously the ones who dont want to see adverts anyway!!!!

'Cos the advertisers pay money to the TV people who then use it to make programmes!! If you are in the UK the exception is the BBC - who we pay money to through our licence to fund programme making. All commercial channels need advertisements to survive so your ideal would put an end to many channels and many programmes, 'cos advertisers wouldn't bother advertising.

The balance between television programs and advertisements is...symbiotic. See, production studios which make television shows need money to pay for sets, actors, props etc. Shows take a LOT of money to make. So they sell the rights to a television network (like CBS) who pays for the show to be made. Then the network people need to make money for suits and food and their families so they sell advertising space on the show. People want to watch these shows so they also watch the ads. That way television is supported through advertising and not directly by the consumer. (Yes you pay for cable, but what you pay is the cable company) Advertisers are not the enemy, they pay for all the shows you watch.
If there were no ads, no one would make money and no one would make telelvision shows. People who make shows need to make money somehow, and as you say a pay-for-play service might be an answer. HBO and Cinemax etc are these kinds of services, you pay for the channel and they pay for movies or shows to be made.
Also, television right now comes in a linear fashion. It starts at one end of a show and runs to the end like a vcr, it doesn't skip around like a DVD and the commercials are spliced into the broadcast, not into the show itself. Right now the way tv is broadcast (mostly) it is impossible to dynamically cut the commercials out. The best you could do is something like seeing a blank screen instead of commercials.
TiVO and other DVR can cut commercials out of something previously recorded because it acts like a vcr, you can just fast forward through the show that is now stored on your tivo instead of the show that is being broadcast.
edit: no tivo did not remove the ability to fast forward through commercials, I use mine constantly and have never been unable to fast forward.

Because no matter how annoying those adverts can get, they provide big bucks! They also keep the costs of the shows down for the TV companies to buy, and us to watch.... if they went up, can you imagine? No programmes to watch, so what would be the point of having a TV?

Tivo had a function that could eliminate adverts when it recorded your shows, but the advertisers kicked off and they removed that function from the Tivo box. I believe Sky+ had a similar function which was later removed, or Sky re-thought about adding it to the Sky+ box.

If a device for cutting ads out existed, advertisers wouldn't spend millions on advertising campaigns and the tv companies would go bust, that's why.

because TV stations make money from Advertisements. There's no way they would allow the TV maufacturers to make such an item. There's too much money in TV ads for them to allow people to not watch them.
Good idea, but unrealistic.

Whenever a "useful" device or tool like you describe comes out, the broadcast industry sues, claiming they lost potential revenue. I recalled this article and search for you....

looks like we need the "convergence" of TV/phone/computer/internet to start making things happen the way we want to (until the governement gets bought out by China)

because the manufacturers don't want such a device, you could use it to remove their ads, and they certainly wouldn't want that. So its a pie in the sky idea, sorry.
