the formula also includes losses by other contenders so theoritically they can lose almost all their games and still make it if other contenders also lose/if you check the standings on yahoo sports there is a parenthesis on each currently contested division leaders indicating amount of combined wins and opponents losses in order to clinch both the division and wildcard berths

it all comes down to winning your division or having the best record in your league (AL or NL) without winning your divsion.

It takes no set number of wins, although, if you win 95 games, chance are that you will make the playoffs somehow...although, it does not mean you will...The top 3 team of the AL Central may very well end up having a better record than some division winners in the NL and the 3rd place team will not make the playoffs.

So, for the Mets, they have won enough games and their closest divisional opponent have lost enough games, so that the Mets lose the rest of their games and their opponent win the rest of their games, the Mets will still have teh best record.

It comes down to the "Rule of 163." There are 162 games in a baseball season...So, If you take the number of wins of the 1st place team and the losses of the 2nd place team and it is equal or greater than 163 then the 1st place team will win no matter what happen the rest of the season...The "Magic Number" is calculated using this formula...163 - (wins of 1st place + losses of 2nd place team)...

Baseball as a whole comes down to thirds. No matter how good a team they will lose at least one third of their games per year. No matter how bad they are, they will win at least one third. It comes down to that last third to determine how the season went.

I believe they just need to keep winning. remember they are just 1/2 game up of the padres. So anything can happen. Lets just keep rooting for the boys in blue.
