If we end up breaking up I believe the apartment would be his. His father had to cosign for us to get it and we are all on the lease.

My boyfriend can't afford anything without me, but it's becoming more apparent to me he can't stand me... or something who knows.

But if he decided to call us off afterall, and I moved out... in Michigan... what happens?

How long am I responsible for my part of the lease?
I hear that if he finds a new roommate I no longer am?
How can I be sure?

Help pls...

You need to get a lawyer to answer this, but based on all the information I have, you would be FULLY responsible for the lease for the duration on the lease as a cosigner. ALL of the parties on any contract are each and every one fully responsible. The lessor will go after all of you if they are not paid and you do not fulfill the terms of the lease. A court might divide up the liability but you cannot count on that. The lessor is entitled to all of the money you contracturally promised to him.

If you are both on the lease you have to keep paying until he finds someone else to take your place or you both and the third person that signed go and remove your name. If he finds someone else, then ALL four of you have to go and take care of the paperwork at the apartment office. Keep in mind the aparment complex might charge you for this as well because you are kind of breaking the lease agreements. The father has to be there because he is responsible for this lease.

If you leave and don't pay your half he and his father would have to pay our half but they have grounds to take you to court to recover the money you didn't pay. Which would be worse, they can ask for more than you owe on rent.

Remember you are responsible until the lease is over or when you get your name off of it with everyone's approval.
