I have used vinegar in a jar which helps but I still have them--my house is very clean and I don't leave food out, I got the gnats when I let bananas get too ripe. Now I can't get rid of them.

Set out a small shallow saucer or viniger and sugar. They go for it and drown.

Good old fashion can of reid will work yes I know you dont like that stuff all over the kitchen
but you see the gnats are hiding somewhere in the kitchen and is drawn to fruit and or food or garbage you can,t see them because they are so small they are somewhere high and out of the way and becuse they are so small you will never find them and when you do they will scatter and regroup. You will need to kill them all at one time and it may require a few treatments to get rid of them .Hey it faster and cheaper then a exterminator

Take the trash out!

Don't leave food laying around.

When you open a can or throw away any other food container...wash it out before you pitch it in the garbage.

Don't feed them...they won't be around.

EDIT---- sounds like your best bet would be to fog the place. THey only cost like 7 bucks.

There are sprays that are specified for flying insects that work well. But fresh fruit will draw these pesty fruit flies regardless of what you do.
