It's dark once you close your eyes.. so it's somewhat irrational...
... but I suppose it's similar to my problem where I couldn't bear silence... I suffered from tinnitus for years and couldn't sleep unless there was music playing or I left the TV on... one becomes dependent on it after a while...
... some people can't sleep on their own.. I used to struggle to sleep if there was someone else in the bed...
... you can work through it... as you have demonstrated

I use a nightlight, purely to keep from tripping over my dog's toys and the cats at night. Not ashamed to say that I prefer some light source, at all times. Fear of the dark isn't--mostly--you know, but fear of not being able to see what's out there, and thus make no effective defense, should the need arise. So far, I have had little need for the precaution, but I don't rule it out.
Better safe than sorry.

No i don't need or want the light on, I can't sleep with it on its annoying. But i do have a younger sister who was scared of every thing when we were younger. She honest to god made my life h-ll as a child, she used to wake me up every time she needed to go to the bath room. She saw monsters in every closet and around every door. As an adult now she still leaves the light on at night and the TV. She's weird!!!!!

Strange but I don't turn any lights off until I'm ready to get straight into bed bcoz I don't like to walk around in the dark but once I'm in bed then I feel safer in the dark. How weird is that, I never thought about it until your Question! Im 24 and live alone.

Having always been prone to the phenomena known as "night terrors," I have always found it difficult to sleep with the light off. Of course, now that I am in a neighborhood where there is plenty of light streaming through the windows most nights has made it much easier to keep the light off.

No, I don't need lights. And I don't have any monsters in my furniture.
I have learnt one important thing - only when you have some little lamp on the darkness seems scary, as it is fighting with the little light you have. When you turn it off, you'll see, there is no such thing as complete darkness and if you get used to it, it can be very comfortable.

I don't leave the lights on at night, and I'm not really *scared* of the dark. One thing I do find though, having mostly lived in cities, is that when I'm in a rural area and it's properly can't-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face dark, that makes me really uncomfortable. Not scared exactly, but it's weird!

Yes i sleep with an enegry saving light on, had night lights when i was a young boy and now cant sleep without a light on, and it also lets others know that theres someone home and that makes me feel safer too, i have it on a timer for when im not at home.

Not anymore - but my rabbit used to be very scared of the dark and he used to scream and thump all night if we didn't leave the kitchen light on so that it reflected into his hutch!! He terrified my neighbours children, (they didn't know what was making the bumb in the night!!) so they had to have lights on too!!
Sadly he passed away, so now we can turn all the lights off!!

Sleep in complete darkness. If I get scared I put on the radio for comfort.
