Get an 'external enclosure/case' £7 on ebay. You can then insert your hard drive in it and use it on any computer that has a USB port. It's good to have it as an external drive anyway. Make sure the enclosure/case supports 2.5" drives.

If you mean broken as in physically broken, then your hard drive would have nothing to do with it and if the repair person said they would wipe it "take it somewhere else". If it is just blank, there could be many issues. If that is the case, I would suggest getting a laptop HD to IDE adapter so you can connect the hard drive to a desktop computer and get all the data off.

Yes. There is a standard VGA port somewhere on you laptop. Plug in a computer monitor and boot up the laptop. As to your data, I would get a copy of Norton's Ghost, and ghost the drive. Save the image on either a different computer, or onto a CD. Then when you get the laptop back, simple place the image back onto the laptop.

If its the actual screen thats broke that shouldnt mean losing any data. There should be a socket on the back of your laptop that will allow you to plug in a normal monitor. That should allow you to backup your coursework on a cd!

TAKE IT TO ANOTHER SHOP!! I have worked in IT for 10 years, and replacing a laptop screen WILL NOT wipe the data. I'd take it elsewhere if I was you!

No way will renewing the screen damage any data.
Think about it: If you got a new monitor, would that affect your Hard drive?
If worried, connect a monitor.
STRONGLY ADVISE TO FIND ANOTHER SHOP

you should have a standard monitor port on your laptop.
you can connect a standard PC monitor to this.
you may have to use a 'switch screen' key to activate the output from this port....on my laptop this is (function key) and F7 - yours may be different.
I agree with those answers who say to take it elsewhere. It will not affect your hard drive to replace the sceeen
