Ive never bought anything by virtue of me seeing an advert - ever. am i alone in this? I think advertising is out of control. i always try to turn over the TV when the ads come on but only end up flicking around as the other channels are showing ads at the same time! I wish there was a law against over advertising as it really spoils watching films etc.

Sorry but this notion that adverts somehow subconciously program us is rubbish. I buy what i need. I buy the clothes i like. The car i like. The food i like etc etc. Im not a brainless pawn!

So what people are saying is that TV Viewers are lab rats being coerced into buying stuff they dont want? Is that legal? Is that fair? Is that moral?

I just think its almost mythological assumption by advertising types that people respond to adverts so easily. What is being said here is that TV programmes wouldnt exist without adverts and vica versa - what a sad state of affairs! TV stars and movie stars are paid too much anyway so lets get rid of the adverts, pay a bit more to the cable and tv companies, pay the TV and movie stars less and get a grip on reality!

But dont you think we all develop and immunity to advertising after a while as there is too much of it? it therefore becomes innefective and pointless and just annoying?

Agreed. Ever notice how the only ads on tv these days are either for fast food or drugs. Not for anything practical. It's not worth our time. I don't want to buy a drug any more because some paid actor is pretending to be a doctor and recommends it.

Very often I am amused or interested in an advert and afterwards I have no idea what they are advertising. On the other hand some of them are so cringe making I refuse to buy on principle.
However I think they are a necessary evil as the programmes have to be paid for.

Well, adverts do spoil the pleasure of watching any program they're cutting into.
But, you say you've never bought anything because it was advertised. That might be less true then you think. We see an ad and seemingly forget it. But it stays in our mind and effects uor decisions even without us knowing about it. That is probably why the producers and sellers so want to advertise their products.

Advertising provides the revenue for the TV stations,; without it, we would be paying far, far more to view TV. Advertising works on some more than others, and on more of us than we probably realise, or would want to admit, and it is all-pervasive.
When I worked for myself, advertising worked. It got me new customers, then, all being well, they spread the word verbally, and then I got more work. Just different types of advertising.

Well, advertising is such a huge industry because most people, unlike you, buy into it. Basically, advertising convinces people to buy things they really don't need. And especially with the use of celebrities - it works. Without advertising, much of the things we use everyday might not exist. Advertising is a major, MAJOR source of U.S. economic wealth.

Advertising allows companies to earn more money when there are people who believe what they say and buy things. Since they earn the profits back, they wouldnt think it's a waste of money.
But it sure is a waste of time for us tv-watchers sitting there waiting for our show to resume. If time is money, then advertising is wasting our money.
If it bugs you too much, get cable tv or Tivo. (;

You're right! Advertisers must be losing money. I dont read any newspapers anymore 'cos they're all too right wing. Also they're trying to sell me something i cant afford. I don't watch much tv either.

It's always been about fooling people,& it works.They wouldn't spend all that money unless they knew it worked.Anyway,the consumer pays,because there is an add-on to the price to cover advertising costs.
