She's only in 2nd grade and expected to spell words like "appreciate". What's the best way to help her learn these spelling words?

Thanks!

The best way is to know she can do it. The worst thing you can do as a parent is sell your kid short. a 6 year old can learn so much more than people think.
For spelling words, use them in sentences and don't act like they are hard words. Just act normal. she will get it and then you can work on spelling.

My oldest son is in the second grade as well and also had to spell appreciate. First find out what type of learning abilities your daughter has, you daughter's teacher should have a survey to help finds that out. My son for instance is a Kinesthetic learner and a visual learner. He has other learning abilities but those are his strongest ones. I also ask him to say the word then spell it. Depending on what type of learning ability, make flash cards (visual), spell the words on tape and play it back to her and have her repeat them (verbal), have her make the letter with her body as she is spelling them (kinesthetic). Go over her spelling words everyday and on Wednesday give her a quiz without out looking at the words then you can seewhich words whe is having trouble with. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I have my first grader type them out in Word, then we print them out, cut them out and use them as flash cards (kinda). I hold onto the cards and ask her to spell the words, the ones she gets correct go in one pile, the ones she gets incorrect go in another pile. When we are done, she studies over the incorrect pile, I quiz her again, adding the correct answers to the correct pile, incorrect get studied again til she gets them all correct. She only gets 5 spelling words a week, so we area able to work on them several days a week without taking too much time from other subjects.

Well have her to write her spelling words five times each everyday until testing. Also test her on the the words she written to see does she know them. If she don't, have her to write them five more times.By the end of the week, she'll know how to spell each word.

Drills. Over and over. Old fashioned but it works. Once she gets to be 38 she won't know how to spell anymore anyway. I think spell check has made us all illiterate. LOL!

repetition is the best way having her say them and write them down helps children memorize words better. You can give her a practice test.
