When I took American History in the 11th grade it was in 1998. I emailed a teacher at my old high school and they say they start at the reconstruction era. Yet the last time students will take American History is the 8th, that to me, is quite a timespan between the first half and the second half.

I teach the American Revolution and I'm a 4th grade teacher. I'm not sure when it comes up again. Go to your state's Dept. of Education and find state standards and curriculum.

that depends on the curriculum for your district. My kids learned about it in various contexts within state history, american history, etc. starting in middle school.
