Tegenaria gigantea spiders are common throughout the UK now but come originally from a warmer climate, they like to come indoors as the weather turns autumnal, and are a common sight trotting about the house, or trying to get out of baths. They regularly reach 3" across. As with other UK spiders, they are harmless.

I think it's the milder, damper climate we have now so they are surviving longer. This is the time of year when they are most active scurrying round the house. Thankfully it's also when conkers are ripe. Spiders hate these so put bowls of them around the house - it really DOES deter them. Betterware sell a spider repellent spray too which I've just ordered. They give mw the willies!

We got a whopper the other night spent about 10 minutes chasing it around the living room before putting it out the window.

Hi
Yes its the male spiders looking for the females in-doors,
the males are very big and apparently this is the season for them, and they are hunting for the females, but the good part is once they have found the female spider they kill the male.
Also the first sight of any frost, they all DIE!!!!!!!
Hooray! for that it can't come sooner for me. I really hate them and so does my daughter and my husband teases me with them.
