AVG is an antivirus so the computer will be free from CURRENT viruses. Make sure you keep it updated.

Zonealarm is a firewall. It keeps programs from calling home... unless you ok them to use the internet.

Don't forget spyware and adware and other kinds of software you install in the computer.

The ONLY way to be safe is to stay off the internet. (kinda like the ONLY safe sex is NO sex)

Hello,
You have taken well thought out first steps to protect your computer. It is a shame there are so many threats and one cannot fully protect themselves from every threat, but informed choices can be made. You are wise to seek out advise.

Just from my own experience, I have learned some of the fundamentals of smart internet surfing. Most of my information came from "Kim Komando". She is a radio host that has a 3 hour program devoted to computers. 80 % of the questions phoned in to her pertain to computer safety. I have been listening every week for about the last 8 years, it is very informative for the beginner. She also has a web site.

Speaking for "Kim" she would suggest an adware remover program. I use "Spybot, Search and Destroy" and a few free ones. Unlike firewalls and antivirus where using only one is recommended, a person can have many adware programs.

That is the nickle tour of internet safety. A person could write volums about the subject.

One final thing. When I started computing I would sign up for offers and free promotional stuff without reading the EULA's. But, I have been burned so many times that now I carefully read every one of them before I sign up for anything. They are pretty much written in the same leagaleze maner but can be quickly scanned for provisions you would really not want if you were informed about the offer up front. As they say "the devil is in the details"

Have fun on the internet. It is largly still undiscovered territory much like the old west. The are few rules, and while that allows for the free exchange of ideas it is also an attractive target for those who do not value liberty.

My spell checker was not working.

AVG is a poor antivirus and while zonealarm is good the two could conflict and cause problems on your computer. You would be better off to remove AVG and just use zonealarm.

You should be fine with that combination, the next step is to educate yourself on what not to do online.

Most viruses are received via email or downloaded by the user. Use common sense and don't download things you aren't completely sure about.

Make sure that you have all the Windows Updates installed, don't download questionable files and don't get taken in by people playing on your fear of virus infection. Don't trust any email that comes from Microsoft professing new updates, don't trust any email from your bank containing a login link, and don't trust anything from eBay, PayPal or any other financial institution regarding account access limits.

Good luck.

Not sure about zonealarm but for sure with avg you're safe. however you need to update the database with the update feature using an internet connection. then you'll be even safe. i use it all the time and just for fun i've even activated the auto feature. it runs every morning, i check for updates every two days or so and voila am a happy camper. it checks my incoming and outgoing mail as well.

those are especially strong ... in case you do not have already got Microsoft Defender put in, you should apply that too ... its variety of a source hog, even if it does the trick. All of those and also you're ok for information superhighway and e mail safe practices ... yet there are a form of elements on line to guard your pc even more beneficial. verify U.S. Cert for even more beneficial recommendations to harden your pc adversarial to the different sorts of attacks. so a concepts as loose antivirus classes pass, i have switched from AVG to AntiVir ... yet both are especially strong.

To an extent yes your are safe, but with new viruses and trojans anything can happen.

Try installting Sybot Search & Destroy and enable the tea timer. It keeps a track on every registry change and it asks you if a certain entry can be added/edited/deleted from registry and this way you can keep your computer more safe.
