Well, I self-published a little book of poems when I was young, but I do not even have a copy of it anymore. It was pretty bad, but one or two poems were worth remembering.

The concept of self-publishing has changed quite a bit in the intervening years. You can get real books printed and bound by using services you contact on the Internet, and do not have to deal with printers and bookbinders yourself. It used to be the only people who could do that were people who could afford like a month salary at their day job to the costs of publishing. But the Web has brought competition, and it costs less now, relatively speaking.

Also, you now have all-service places like Kinkos, where you can self-publish if you want to do something resembling what I did: pamphlet style, basically. Today it might be set up on a word processor and have illustrative "cuts," where I had to persuade an artistic friend to put a few nice drawings on mine. But the copies of 8.5 x 11 paper folded into booklet form and stapled in the center would be the same. Ameteurish, but that can be charming in the case of self-published works. Certainly less expensive.

And there is Web publishing. A friend of mine has a novel signed up with one of these, and apparently they are very different, depending on what you want to do with it. But there are also blogs that go on for page after page, some of them quite good, and you know, you do not have to pay for that: Yahoo! 360 is free.
