Try talking to some. I worked with a black man who grew up in S Carolina & was one of the first people to do the forced bussing. I had my daughter interview him as part of her school paper. Surprisingly, he's not bitter now & has all races of friends.

Load the trunk of your car with 24 six packs of Coors Beer and drive up to Harlem, NY. Park on any busy corner and hang a "Free Beers" sign on the open trunk lid. When folks begin to gather, you can ask them sort of direct like about your project and all. My guess is that they will tell you a lot.
