It is friction, and the type of friction is "fluid friction". The top speed the object reaches when free-falling is terminal velocity. This is reached when the fluid friction (from air resistance or air drag) is equal to the force of gravity.

i'm also going with air resistance, b/c when you drop an object in the vaccum tube there is no air resistance and the object drops at true speed.
