Is an oil stain and a water based polyurethane compatible.?

I'm staining wood oak doors and have had some difficulty with consistency and color changes

Once the oil stain has fully dried you can apply water based polyurethane. They are compatible because the oil stain has dried.

Oil and water don't mix.
