Are we afraid of nukes, or of cheap, safe nuclear power?

That is, after all, what Iran says it's doing. That'd have to be scary for a bunch of oilmen, wouldn't it?

I agree. It certainly seems that way.
The UN has said that there are no nukes in Iran, and no intention of producing any.
The press and the government of America are building up another excuse for war like the Iraqi WMD story.

We are afraid of the rapid spread of the atomic technology. The more this information gets out, the more counties will pick it up and run with it. It is not easy to turn the technology into a mature nuclear weapon, but even a dirt bomb would be devastating over a small area if it were in or around a major city.
The irony is two fold. First, it is an accepted fact in the study of munitions that any weapon a country creates and uses is compromised and eventually ends up in the hands of the enemy.
Finally, we created this stuff, atomic weapons and power, and we are the only ones to use nuclear material as a weapon, so the United States and its people are the responsible people for the spread of nuclear weapon's technology.
We try hard to blame others, but we did it! And I believe it is up to us to fix it. We could start by beginning the process of disarmament. We have far and away the most nuclear weapon's stockpiled. We could destroy half of our capacity and then ask the world to disarm with us by eliminating their weapons. How many bombs do you need to kill the human race included the kids and the unborn children?

It isn't what they say they are doing, and that is what the IAEA inspectors have verified who have been there for 2 years! Iran has 3% grade uranium and 5% enrichment is required to operate a power plant which is perfectly legal under the NPT!! 95% grade is required for a nuke!

Article IV

1. Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with Articles I and II of this Treaty.

If you believe Iran is pursuing nuclear power instead of weapons you're a fool. One, the material they're pursuing is for weapons. Two, if they were pursuing nuclear fuel they would allow U.N. inspectors in, if they had nothing to hide. Three, Iran is a terrorist nation. Four, they have openly said Israel should be wiped off the map. Five, they will not hesitate to follow through with their threats. Six, their religion demands that they convert people to Islam by the sword.

I heed the threat that they are. You, on the other hand, don't have enough common sense to recognize that threat. In this regard you and people like you are a threat for being so foolish.

What we're afraid of is a regime with an acknowledged goal of "wiping Israel off the map" posessing the technology that could allow it to pursue that goal with reckless abandon.

Now, I know alot of people are saying, "so what? Israel isn't the United States!" But the thing is, IF Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, Israel would respond in kind with a nuclear attack on Iran....and possibly Syria as well.

And you think the middle east is in chaos right now....

I don't think you can get weapons grade plutonium from a nuclear reactor made to produce electricity.
The problem is..what will they do with the spent fuel rods.....they can be made into a weapons grade plutonium.
