Illegal means doing something that's always against the law....such as stealing.

Unlawful means doing something (which may or may not be against the law) unlawfully. An example is an armed policeman shooting somebody. He can do it lawfully, or unlawfully, depending on the circumstances.

Isn't illegal when you deliberatley set out to break the law or disregard the law and unlawful when you break the law without intending to?

Don't know btw - that's just my interpretation

There certainly IS a difference but I would have struggled to define it. Hibee's answer cites a good example. It's like the difference between edible and eatable.
