I have also a hp pavillion. Here is the trick.
right click on the empty screen.
select properties from the menu.
Click on screen saver panel.
Click on Power button.
Click on advanced panel
Under power buttons there is a drop down menu under
"when I close the lid of my computer"
Select "Do nothing" from the drop down menu.
press Apply
Stay on the same window.
This is the first part. Now the second part.
Click on "Power Schemes" panel
Under Settings for portable/laptop schemes.
When computer is plugged in- and running on batteries.
Select from drop down menu
Turn off hard disk - Never - Never
System standby - Never - Never
Click Apply
Click OK

A lot of laptops go into standby when closed. Thus internet connection is lost. However, you can leave it on. I leave my laptop on always. Only the occasional reboot actually after an installation. It shouldn't harm anything. I can close mine and it doesn't go into standby only because the the little tap is broken off to automatically start standy when its closed. Might be an issue though if it is closed and still running downloads of overheating, i guess that depends where your ventilation is located on the laptop.

I believe there's a way to do this...
Okay...
Start / Control Panel / Power Options
Click on the "Advanced" tab
Down in the lower half, there are some questions...
When I close the lid on my computer...
Select "Do Nothing"
Maybe that'll help

Yup, goto the control panel, and power options.
Under the advanced tab you should be able to set how your laptop behaves when you close it.
if you set it so that it doesnt do anything when you close it, your laptop can only be standby'd by hitting the silver button.

Righ click on your desktop. Click properties, click screen saver, click power, and the click advance. In here you can pick what happens when you close the lid.
