or
72/25.4 pt = 1 cm

I know GD 1 uses pixels for font size and GD2 points.
Also GD2 renders at 96dpi instead of the usual 72 dpi

So if you want a 12px font size in GD2 you have to calculate the point size
like (12/96)*72 or a bit less code.. 12*0.75;

This is also needed to convert the Flash points to GD2 points, because of
the rendering difference, thus multiply the flash points with 0.75 and
you're done.

This varies by screen resolution. As you said, 72 pt is one inch, thus however many pixels are in an inch (varies by monitor settings) is how many pixels per 72 pt.
