Not always. If you have a standard PC at home and, possibly, a network, then yes you will either need a BT line and broadband or a cable service (which gets a phone line).
The alternative is, if you have a laptop, is look at the mobile connect cards that companies such as vodafone and t-mobile are offering. There new packages run at speeds of upto 1.8Mbs - so although not as fast a new broadband is normally enough, and the t-mobile package is on £17.00 per month for a 2G monthly download limit.

No but you have to run a cable into your house and most cable companies do really good deals on broadband and phone packages.

if you live in the thames valley area, you can get nowbroadband, or something along those lines... they'll supply you with a radio wireless card for your computer/laptop, its not traditional wifi, but its close and doesn't involve any cables

you could get it via a satelite connection.... used to be very expensive.....
but normal BB needs to either via a telephone phone line or a cable company!
