I'm 6'0, 217lbs. My current workout routine opens up with 30 minutes of cardio (normally the elyptical), and lifting weights for another hour.

I can't afford a personal trainer and the doc wants me to lose another 40-50lbs.

Are there any suggestions for a workout routine where I can improve my cardio without sacrificing what I'm trying to do which is tone up?

Your not gonna like this answer but the only way to lose real weight is by running. The elyptical is a joke and will take you 5 times as long as running to lose the same amount of weight. Start out running 2 miles 3days a week for 2 weeks. Then you need to gradually add mileage until you are up to about 12-15 miles a week. Im 6ft 192 but my waist is only 31 and I dont even eat that great, its all from running. You will be amazed at how fast the pounds come off, but its going to take discipline. Those first few weeks you will be sore and hurting, but trust me push through it and the benefits FAR outweigh the negatives. Once you see the pounds coming off you will be addicted and running is a great life excercise you can always keep up till late in your life. Heres the catch though, DO NOT QUIT on any single run, no matter how much it hurts or how slow you have to go finish your run, it sucks at the time but when you are finished you are so glad with yourself that you didnt quit. You will be down to the high 190s before you know it. Good luck, and drop that stupid elyptical............

Try doing high intensity interval training (HIIT) at least once a week. Here's how HIIT works: Pick an aerobic exercise like jogging, cycling, rowing, swimming, etc. Do a 30-second "sprint" followed by 90-120 seconds of "low pace" cardio. Repeat 8-12 times. As you get used to it, you can lengthen your sprints in 10-second increments or decrease your low-pace segments in 10-second increments (or both) and you can add repetitions if you like, but don't go above 15. It's also a good idea to do different types of cardio because your body gets used to the muscle movements over time and your cardio workouts become less effective unless you push yourself a lot harder. So switch it up as often as you can. Good luck losing that last 50 pounds!

Try adding interval training into your cardio.

You cannot out eat a bad diet. If you can, make some adjustments to your diet. Diet is extremely important. To slim your body you must:

Burn more calories than you eat.

Cut your fat intake.

Eat three cups of fat free low cal yogurt a day (make sure it has live cultures in it) and some fresh Pineapple. This helps you break down your food.

Do 45-60 min. of aerobic exercise a day (preferably before you eat in the morning). This will attack your fat reserves.

Weight lifting can add muscle (and weight) to your frame. If you have a lot of muscle, do light weight with a lot of repetitions (3 sets of 15) This will keep the muscle you have and keep you from gaining much more.

I lost 40 lbs in two months and have kept it off for two more months doing this. I also took my body fat % from 30% to 14%

Be Blessed
